The Ford lineup was a hit at the Grand Rapids Area New Car Dealer Association’s 12th annual Michigan International Auto Show earlier this month at Devos Place. According to organizers, attendance at the four-day auto-fest hit nearly 45,000, up 8.8 percent from the 40,500 who showed up in 2009.

Borgman sales pros were on hand to help showcase what by all counts was one of the biggest hits. Attractions this year included Ford’s Car and Truck of the Year (the automaker’s first sweep, awarded at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit), and a growing number of hybrid cars, trucks, and SUVs. For many visitors, Ford’s stellar lineup promises to make converts, for reasons as varied as the robust lineup on display.

“Ford had the most impressive display at the auto show which, with everything going on, drew many folks over who had never considered or owned a Ford in the past. I also spoke with many individuals who had a genuine interest in buying a Ford product,”  said Dennis O’Shea, Borgman sales pro who staffed the show.

A lime green Fiesta was a focal point for the young and the hip awaiting rollout of this eco-friendly vehicle.
“The Ford Fiesta received a lot of attention because of its fresh look and dynamic display,” said Borgman’s Bernie Lenau.

Whether car aficionados were looking for hybrid-style gas-sipper or the tough-built quality on the job, the 2010 lineup could not be beat.

The Super Duty dwarfs Steve Hinga

The gleaming Ford F-150 Super Duty towered over visitors looking for raw power. Many of the visitors acknowledged a new affection for the Ford brand for its patriotic handling of the financial meltdown.

“Lots of people said Ford would be their next vehicle; they were impressed Ford didn’t take the bailout.”

2011 Ford Edge Has the Edge…in Crossovers!

February 16th, 2010

4345534791_5050bd0f85Look around. Unless you’re living in a cave you’ve probably noticed how more and more consumer products offer both high style and high technology. More than ever, great design truly is within reach.

Consider the Ford Edge. When customers made it the No. 1-selling vehicle in the midsize crossover segment in its first full year on the market it was, in part, because of the Edge’s great style and technology. Launching this summer, the 2011 Ford Edge stands to redefine the segment with a wide-ranging scope of improvements.

Bold, flowing design makes Edge the can’t-miss crossover

The bolder, more seamlessly flowing exterior design freshening is mirrored by a complementary interior, characterized by increased craftsmanship, improved materials and overall better execution. Improved fit-and-finish, softer touchpoints, and flexibility in terms of stowage in the cabin and throughout mark the 2011 Ford Edge. Read the rest of this entry »

February 16th, 2010

4346382431_384cdd50c9The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid earned the inaugural Hermance Vehicle Efficiency Award Wednesday at the Chicago Auto Show. The award is named for the late Dave Hermance, the legendary engineer and vocal proponent of hybrid-electric vehicles who died in 2006 at the age of 59 when his experimental plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean.

The Hermance award, which is given by BermanWorks, the media company behind, honors new North American vehicles that best represent the vision of practical efficiency and risk-taking – two qualities the engineering wizard and avid pilot cherished. earnhardtGRAND RAPIDS, Mich – With the excitement of seeing new factory concept cars, the 2010 automotive line up, and dreaming of owning that special ride it may be difficult to see where the automobile industry has taken us in the last 100 plus years. At the 12th Annual Michigan International Auto Show, February 4-7, at Devos Place in Downtown Grand Rapids that won’t pose a problem. Nine vintage vehicles from the collection of the renowned Gilmore Car Museum will be on display, amid the over 300 brand new examples.

The ever expanding museum, located less than an hour south of Grand Rapids in Hickory Corners, is considered one of the “Top Five” car museums in the nation and will feature a stunning display of vehicles.

Surprisingly you’ll find both hybrids and ultra luxury autos in both new and old, such as a 1907 Franklin air-cooled roadster that boasted over 40 mpg or a 1929 Duesenberg that new, cost the equivalent over $250,000 in today’s dollars.

Many of the cars the museum will feature this year have ties to celebrities and the entertainment – movie and TV – industries, including a 1967 Ferrari formerly owned by actor Nicholas Cage, a Duesenberg used as a factory demonstrator for Hollywood elite, or the 2003 Dale Earnhardt Jr. raced #8 “Staind” Budweiser True Music NASCAR race car. A complete line up, with descriptions, is found below.

The 2010 Gilmore Car Museum Cars (more detailed information listed below)

1907 Franklin Roadster – Aircooled / 40 MPG. . Famous pioneer aviators Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, and Frank Hawks each owned Franklins as personal cars.
1929 Duesenberg – Built for the 1929 New York Auto show, Hollywood demonstrator car, and later owned by actor Buster Keaton’s son.
1940 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet – Marketed to the Rich and Famous and buyers included Hollywood legends Rita Hayworth, Mickey Rooney, and Frank Sinatra. You may also recognize this model as the type featured in “The Godfather.”
1957 Oldsmobile (black) –  Not Your Father’s Oldsmobile! This four door hardtop features the rare tri-power identical to the Olds stock cars run in NASCAR by Lee Petty and his rookie son Richard Petty.
1967 Ferrari – formerly owned by actor Nicholas Cage
1969 Camaro Yenko – The 1969 Camaro is iconic and without question the most popular Camaro ever produced. The recently reintroduced Camaro features retro styling based on the 1969 models.
1982 Checker cab – The iconic Checker Cab was produced in Kalamazoo and has appeared in more TV and movies than any other car EVER made.
1982 DeLorean – The futuristic creation of John DeLorean is best known as the car from Back to the Future.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. 2003 True Music Monte Carlo stock car – A RACE DRIVEN CAR! Driven at Richmond 9-2003 to 17th place.

In addition to the impressive collection of cars, the Gilmore Car Museum will also showcase a limited number of its automotive hood ornaments (also known as mascots). While the museum may best be known for its collection of over 200 extraordinary automobiles, it also possesses one of the nation’s largest collections of automotive mascots on public display. In fact, the popular PBS television series Antiques Roadshow, featured the museum’s collection of over 1,600 mascots, ranging from the fanciful to rare, during an episode last year.

The exhibit of automotive hood ornaments—works of art in their own right—will include rare examples from the 1920s and 1930s, including a magnificent crystal eagle’s head mascot designed by world-renowned glass artist René Lalique of Paris.

Also, a short film about the Gilmore Car Museum—produced by students employed through Michigan Works! as part of the economic stimulus program in the summer of 2009—will be shown throughout the show.

Founded in 1966 in Hickory Corners, the Gilmore Car Museum is nestled on a 90-acre, park-like setting less than an hour south of Grand Rapids. This world-class collection is truly one of Michigan’s hidden treasures, with over 200 extraordinary vehicles and its restored historic barns, spanning more than 100 years of automotive heritage. The Gilmore Car Museum is open daily, May 1 through October 31 and is host to a variety of special car show events throughout its season.

The 12th Annual Michigan International Auto Show is presented by the Grand Rapids New Car Dealers Association and is one of 16 consumer expositions produced by ShowSpan Inc., Grand Rapids, Michigan. Founded in 1945, ShowSpan – a John D. Loeks Company – has grown to be one of the largest producers of consumer shows in the Midwest.
